Due to its superb collection as the only museum of cultural history in the Rhineland, the LVR-LandesMuseum shows the development of the region from its beginnings to the present day. In the permanent exhibition, the visitor is greeted with an eventful journey through time, from the Stone Age up to today. Not only is the world-famous original Neanderthal man (40,000 years B.C.) on display here, but also the world's largest Neolithic well. Further highlights are the Fritzdorf gold beaker from the Bronze Age, the Pfalzfeld Column dating from Celtic times, and a treasure that had once belonged to a Celtic princess from Waldalgesheim. Roman times may be discovered in one of the best Roman provincial collections in all of Germany.

The underwater findings of sunken ships off the coast of Sicily make their worldwide important stories and history come alive. They tell of a Phoenician merchant ship more than 3,000 years old, of Punic, Roman, and Egyptian ships taking part in the Battle of the Aegates in 241 BCE, up to the times of a Byzantine merchant ship with a precious church interior.

For the photographer, publicist and (lecturer-)traveler Konrad Helbig (1917-1986) Sicily was a place of longing. After first coming to the island in 1954, he returned here over and over again until he died, capturing the land and its people as well as Sicily's art and culture in more than 17,000 photographs.

Man lived as a hunter and gatherer for 2.5 million years. Depending on the seasons and the migrations of his catches, he traversed the various landscapes, adapting to the most varying climatic conditions.

The year 1971 witnessed the publishing of the photo book "Paare (Couples)" for which Beate Rose photographed couples throughout all of Germany. 40 years later, the Cologne photographers Nadine Preiß and Damian Zimmermann have come out with a new edition of the "Couples Project": Over the past three years, the two photographers pointed their camera at couples from all social strata. Both projects uniquely document the self-images of couples and a comparison of the two projects clearly reveals how much our society has changed over the past 40 years.

A hundred years ago, in February 1914, stone quarry workers in Bonn-Oberkassel made a sensational discovery: the skeletons of a man and a woman along with a dog and artworks carved from bone. Alone the fact of a double burial 14,000 years old that contained the remains of the earliest Homo sapiens is something unique in Central Europe. But through the connection with Ice Age art and one of the earliest dogs in the history of man, the importance of this grave has been enhanced even more.

This exhibition at the LVR-LandesMuseum Bonn reminds of the end of the 2nd world war 70 years ago now. The exhibition confronts two important photographers oft he immediate post-war period with each other: Hermann Classen (1899-1987) and Richard Peter (1895-1977). Hermann Claasens „Gesang im Feuerofen“ from 1947 shows Cologne in ruins. The illustrated book published the first time in 1950 „Dresden, eine Kamera klagt an“ from Richard Peter sen. documented the destruction of Dresden.

Weiblicher Energieaustausch

Am 14. Mai 2012 erhielt Ulrike Rosenbach den Rheinischen Kunstpreis des Rhein-Sieg-Kreises für ihr Lebenswerk. Die Ausstellung im LVR-LandesMuseum Bonn vom 15. Mai bis zum 5. Oktober belegt durch einen Überblick über mehr als 40 Jahre künstlerischen Schaffens die enorme Bedeutung Ulrike Rosenbachs für die Entwicklung der Video- und Performancekunst auf nationaler und internationaler Ebene und zeigt, dass sie dabei immer auch Vorbild und Impulsgeberin für jüngere Positionen gewesen ist.

Hochzeit des Lichts - Eine Hommage an Albert Camus

Angeregt durch seine in Paris geborene französische Ehefrau Héléna, setzt sich Oliver Jordan bereits seit über 30 Jahren malerisch mit Albert Camus und dessen Texten, insbesondere mit der Hochzeit des Lichtes und mit der Heimkehr nach Tipasa auseinander.

Die Ausstellung Gebrochener Glanz - Römische Großbronzen am UNESCO-Welterbe Limes im LVR-LandesMuseum Bonn vom 20. März bis zum 20. Juli 2014 präsentiert erstmals unbekannte Statuenfunde diesseits der Alpen und fasst die Ergebnisse der archäologischen, naturwissenschaftlichen und experimentellen Untersuchungen eines großen Forschungsprojektes zur römischen Baukunst zusammen.

Die Ausstellung 1914 – Welt in Farbe bringt den Bilderschatz einer längst versunkenen Welt ans Licht. Im Zentrum der Ausstellung stehen die bislang fast vergessenen Farbfotografien und Filme des französischen Bankiers Albert Kahn.

Begeistert von dem farbfotografischen Verfahren der Gebrüder Lumière beauftragte er in einer Zeit, als die Nationen Europas bereits zum großen Krieg rüsteten, Fotografinnen und Fotografen, um mit Farbbildern aus aller Welt die Archives de la Planète aufzubauen. In diesem wahrhaft planetarichen Bildarchiv haben sich über 70.000 Farbbildaufnahmen erhalten. Die Ausstellung im LVR-LandesMuseum stellt diese faszinierende und immer noch aktuelle Vision in einen zeitgeschichtlichen, keineswegs immer nur friedfertigen Zusammenhang.

Die Ausstellung im LVR-LandesMuseum Die Krim. Goldene Insel im Schwarzen Meer. Griechen – Skythen - Goten präsentierte außergewöhnliche Kunstwerke, die im Spannungsfeld zwischen den städtischen Zentren der Griechen und den reiternomadischen Völkern der Steppe in einem Zeitraum vom 5. Jahrhundert v. Chr. bis zum 5. Jahrhundert. n. Chr. entstanden sind. Zahlreiche Objekte werden erstmals außerhalb der Ukraine gezeigt. Besonders die in Japan aufwendig restaurierten chinesischen Lackkästchen aus dem Gräberfeld von Ust’-Al’ma an der Westküste der Krim, beleuchten die weitgespannten Handelsbeziehungen und Kontakte der Krim (von Shosai Kitamura, Nara National Museum, Japan. Living natural treasure. Urushi Lacquerware artist).

Die Ausstellung umfasst den Zyklus, den Manfred Vogel kurz vor seinem plötzlichen Tod 2008 vollendete. Von 2000 bis 2008 entstand eine Serie von meist großformatigen Gemälden, die der Künstler mit dem christlichen Terminus für die göttliche Liebe "Agape" betitelte. Der Zyklus behandelt im weitesten Sinne biblische Themen, ohne dass diese gleich in den Werken offenbart werden.

Mit diesem bemerkenswerten, urchristlichen Titel gewinnen die Bilder jedoch eine besondere Bedeutung, die für die Interpretation von Vogels Gesamtwerk bedeutsam ist. Die Ausstellung sowie der Katalog entstanden in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Museum Abtei Liesborn und dem Ludwig Museum Koblenz

"Beim Abseilen ist zu berücksichtigen, dass man sich genügend Kräfte für den Wiederaufstieg bewahrt", so lautet eine der Sieben Blalla-Weisheiten der letzten Tage. Und Blalla W. Hallmann wusste um psychische Abstürze, Wiederaufstiege und schließlich auch Höhenflüge aus eigenem Erleben. Gegen Ende seines Lebens veröffentlichte er seine Autobiographie "Curriculum vitae" in 149 Linolschnitten mit dazugehörigen Texten. In der Ausstellung und im begleitenden Katalog wird diese Bildserie erstmalig komplett gezeigt. Es ist der eindrucksvolle Bericht zu Vertreibung, einem Leben am Existenzminimum, Akademiestudium, bis hin zu Erfolgen auf dem Kunstmarkt. Ergänzt wird diese bildnerische Autobiographie durch Gemälde, Zeichnungen und Druckgrafiken aus der Sammlung Kraft, Köln.
