Digital Microscope

The outstanding feature of a digital microscope is its great range of application due to the flexible optics which can be used to make surface examinations even on larger, three-dimensional objects. In exceptional cases, investigations are even possible outside in the open. Combining the optics with a computer makes it possible to show a depth of field in the image portrayal that had not been possible before with microscope optics. The depth of field is achieved by means of doubling the image with data processing. Up to now, this had been a real drawback in microscope photography. The digital microscope is used by the LVR-LandesMuseum for its examinations and documentation in diverse areas of research and work. Particularly when creating an image database for recording findings of organic textile materials, the use of this microscope has only now made possible certain types of research, since frequently it was precisely with respect to these materials that the archaeological findings could only be very poorly documented. Only the Keyence Corporation offers a procedure that makes it possible to measure the thread strength of individual textile warps and wefts as well as to add individual images together to produce a larger overview image (2D & 3D-Stitching Process). The same applies to the microscopic examination of the layers of archaeological findings stemming from a block excavation, or to artisan-crafted objects, e.g. when studying the polychromy on painted statues. These examples pinpoint precisely the problems of analogue microscopy, because with it, it is very difficult to document larger details, i.e, due to the extreme profiles, it is impossible to obtain sharp images within a reasonably sized picture detail.
